If you’re planning on planting a continuous hedge, we’d like to show you just what to do to prep the bed so your plants will have success long term. Start by measuring out the necessary spacing to accommodate your plant for the next few years, reference the width range on the plant tag. Give the plants plenty of space to grow to their mature size and not compete with surrounding plants, especially grass.
DESCRIPTION
Use all the same techniques for planting a shrub hedge that you would use to plant a normal shrub. To offer consistency in the planting itself, do this prep before digging a hole.
1. Measure the distance into the bed that you would like all of your plants to sit at. In this video, the hedge is 2’ away from the fence.
2. Use a measuring tape to mark the distance between each potting hole and mark them with a flag or a stake.
3. Run a line down the bed that touches each planting marker. This will ensure your plants are situated in a straight line.
After planting, water each shrub thoroughly. Apply a 2-3” layer of mulch. Visit regularly to ensure the soil is moist, but don’t water if it is already noticeably moist. Only water when the soil has dried out or is just about to dry out. Water deeply for at least the first year and monitor appropriately afterward, depending on the type of plant you’ve chosen.
